Mesa Analytics has created a prototype solar installation site analysis tool.

Although it’s a very rough draft, the web application lets users pan and zoom a global map which depicts average annual solar insolation levels together with terrain smoothness.
Users who have installed the Google Earth web browser plugin may also view zoomed regions using Google Earth, to learn more about local terrain.
Mesa envisions extending this prototype to present additional quantitative data, such as seasonal extremes of sun elevation angle and average hours of unobstructed sunlight per day. We would also like to extend the site to make it easier to identify existing buildings, roads, power transmission lines, and political boundaries.
